Curicó Valley

More in the south than the other well known wine regions in Chile, the Curicó Valley is located about 220 kilometers from Santiago, the capital of Chile. In this area the climate is moderate Mediterranean, with hot days in the summer and cold-wet nights. The winters are under the influence of the high pressure area of the Pacific, which translates into annual rainfall of approximately 720 mm, being clearly more rainy than the Rapel Valley. About the soil of this area it can be described as a flat, eroded, rich in minerals and with a good permeability. In the highest areas sand and stones predominate. Regarding irrigation, numerous irrigation canals cross the area, fed by the Teno and Lontué rivers. In this area you can find the largest cultivation area of white wine grapes in the country.
Regarding the cultivation figures, the Curicó Valley currently houses around 18,000 hectares of vineyards. In descending order, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, merlot and chardonnay are grown here. The beginnings of wine production go back to the times of the ancient spanish family, which in XIX century introduced noble grapes from France.
